The Day

One Friday, start to finish: the castle from eleven, and the hotel bar from half past six. Everything below runs to the clock on the left.

Mt. Woodson Castle and its windmill across the front lawn

Garden formal

A May noon under full sun: light fabrics, and the paths are stone and the lawn is real, so leave the thinnest heels at home.

Sun and shade

The ceremony is outdoors in full sun, with sun umbrellas on hand. The castle stays open the whole day, so there is a seat indoors whenever anyone wants one.

How we got here

Our Story

Nine moments, in order, one of them on film. Scroll sideways.

A coffee and a bagel, each on a phone screen, a heart between them
A coffee and a bagel
01 of 09

An app named after breakfast decided that a coffee and a bagel ought to meet. Carlie was the coffee. David was the bagel. Nobody consulted either of us about the casting, and nobody has objected since.

David driving through the desert at midnight, Vegas in the mirror
He drove through the night
02 of 09

David was in Las Vegas. The date was the next day in Huntington Beach. A reasonable man would have sent a text and moved it a week. David got in the car at midnight and drove through the dark instead, which in hindsight was the entire personality arriving early.

Carlie hiding in a clothing shop, watching the restaurant across the street
Too nervous to walk in
03 of 09

Carlie arrived early and could not make herself go in. So she took up a position in the Urban Outfitters across the street and watched the restaurant door through the window, heart going far too fast, pretending to be extremely interested in a candle.

Carlie on the phone to her brother from behind a stack of jeans
So she called her brother
04 of 09

From somewhere behind the denim she called her brother Brody and asked him what she was supposed to do. Brody’s advice has never been disclosed. It has never been repeated. Whatever it was, she put the candle down and crossed the street.

Dinner by the window, plates cleared, both still laughing
Dinner went long, then longer
05 of 09

Whatever she saw through that window was enough. Dinner ran long, then longer, and then we went out for a drink afterward, which is the internationally recognized signal that a first date has gone well. Neither of us was looking for a reason to leave.

Cards on a beach towel at sunset, Carlie fully dressed

06 of 09

Second date, second beach. Newport this time. Carlie had decided a bikini was not yet appropriate, and so arrived at the sand in a complete outfit, fully assembled, entirely unbothered. We played cards until the sun went down and the sand went cold, and still neither of us suggested going home.

The chef presents the prawn; Carlie wide-eyed, David delighted
And then, the prawn
07 of 09

Before Carlie flew to Japan, David took her for real sushi and explained, very seriously, that Japan does not do rolls. Then the chef killed a prawn in front of her. She ate it. She ate every single thing on that counter. He has been telling people ever since, and he will tell you at the wedding.

Walking away hand in hand, the earlier scenes behind them
Exclusive by date three
08 of 09

On the third date David suggested, very reasonably, that they be exclusive and see how things go. He said it the way a man proposes a trial period. Carlie agreed to the trial. The trial was never formally concluded. Nobody filed a review, nobody asked for an extension, and the paperwork is now in your hands.

Carlie and David on the hill, from the drone
He brought a drone

Then one afternoon a drone went up, a knee went down, and Carlie said yes. All of it is on film, which means you will be watching it at the wedding whether you would like to or not.
